London 05

Well, I've finally gotten around to putting my thoughts about my trip into words. I had been planning this trip from the US to witness James acting live on the London stage for the past 6 months. It did not disappoint.

I actually knew I would go to London over Halloween ever-since missing the Halloween convention with James & David in 04. After kicking my ass daily for not going then, I decided that if James held another event in London over Halloween, I'd be there...and I was.

James at the St James church concert

My biggest regret was not being allowed to take pictures of the Words & Music event. I was sitting on the front row within spit-shower range and could have produced some fine photos (even with my rather inferior little camera).

All thanks and praise to my trip-roomie and traveling bud - K. I never would have made it through the week without you. *hugs & smoochies* She had been to Halloween 04 the year before and had come well prepared this year. She took no prisoners and booked no excuses. I was forced to bandage my blisters and stifle my whining or get left behind in her dust! We crammed in as much as it was physically possible to do within a 6 day period, using James' 3 events as the centerpieces of our trip.

Day 1:
I left Wednesday afternoon about 1:00 and arrived 15 hours later. I flew all night and arrived in London at 10:00am Thursday (4:00am my time). At that time, I had been awake for 22 hours. K. & I met up at the train station within the airport and took the hour ride into London together. Our hotel was located appro. 1/2 mile from the nearest underground station, thus the saga of my poor, abused feet began. Walking & the tube system was our major form of travel. Speaking of feet, the next day, as I was gawking around not paying attention to where I was going, I stepped in a patch of wet cement (much to my chagrin & K.'s amusement). I can now say that my footprint is immortalized in cement on Kings Cross Road in London. *g*

As soon as we finished checking into the hotel, we headed back downtown to the London Eye. When we arrived, there were hundreds of tourists from all over the world waiting to ride as well. We decided to take one of the many guided boat tours on the Thames river while waiting our turn to ride the Eye. I'm glad we did, it was well worth it. The boat went from the houses of parliament to past the tower bridge. We then got in line, which from now on will be referred to as 'queued' for the Eye. *bg* The Eye is a huge ferris wheel with glass encased cars that can hold 25 people. It takes 30 minutes to make a complete circle of the 433 ft tall (135m) wheel which commands a 25 mile (40k) view of London! By the time we were done, it was getting dark and time to make our way to Islington for the concert at the Carling Academy.

We caught the nearest tube and make our way to the Angel *g* station. It took us a few minutes and a helpful young man to find the right direction once we hit the street. But soon we discovered a long, chatty queue of lovely young ladies and deduced we were in the right place. By this time I had been awake 31 hours. As soon as we were allowed to enter, we met up with some familiar faces, got some refreshment and found the best place we could to view the concert.

A pretty young blond girl, with a very good voice, named Evi Vine was the supporting act. You can check her out here: http://www.evivine.com/
After a few minutes break, James came on to a noisy & appreciative crowd. His set list:

Carling Academy Islington
All That She Wanted
This Town
London City
Finer Than Gold
Everyman Thinks...
Up On Me
Angel
Poor Robyn
Birth of the Blues
Long Time
Smile
Louise
For What I Need
Button Down Vandals
No Promises
Civilized Man
Goodbye
Dangerous
Bad

All That She Wanted & Up On Me were new songs just recently written. Button Down Vandals was a song that he said he wrote a while ago about a close high school friend that is now a lawyer for the elite environmental group, the Sierra Club. Someone had heard it recently and talked him into performing it. I'm so glad they did. I think it's my favorite of all! It's really terrific. All about how although he & his high school buddies did the teen rebellious thing they still managed to become doctors & lawyers...& TV stars!
I also liked the other new songs too, especially Up On Me. Pretty.

His song writing just keeps getting better, I think. This was the first time that I've heard Finer Than Gold, London City, Birth of the Blues & Louise performed live. Finer Than Gold & London City were both beautiful. The song Louise is a nice tribute to her - she sounds like someone I'd like to meet. I love how he sings the blues, but I didn't really care for Birth of the Blues. I don't know, it just seemed too contrived to me. Sorry James. I think he needs to stick more to his own experiences when writing the blues.

He looked incredible, as usual. He wore the obligatory black T-shirt and distressed jeans and his hair was "Fine". *bg* I can't help it, I'm so glad he had to let his hair grow out some. I like his hair longer. If only he'd let it go natural. *sigh*

I really enjoyed the atmosphere at this concert. Everybody seemed jazzed and nobody was yelling for him to remove any of his clothing. This was a club and had the smokey, loud, physically uncomfortable familiarity of a live music club venue. The people around me were passing joints around during the concert and I felt as if I had been transported about 25 years back in time. *lazy smile* I was so tired by this time that I think I was becoming delirious. Especially after a couple of beers and having to stand through the entire show. After a nice 2 song encore, it was regrettably over.

K. & I made our way back to the hotel, where I had to force myself to take a shower - I was so tired, but had been in the same clothes now for 36 hours! *yuck*
As soon as I got out of the shower, I passed out. It was a good thing I was so tired too, because the weather was unseasonably warm in London for the end of October and London does not have AIR CONDITIONING!!!!

To come - Day 2:

Which of course means: not that you can't give constructive criticism, just don't dis.

And this in regard to the recent stream of anti-James Marsters fans bitching and belly-aching about how he doesn't kiss their wide shiny asses! Well, as far as I can tell, he doesn't owe them anything except entertainment for the price of a ticket. Everything else is none of their damn business. Period. So if you want to make professional suggestions about how he can improve his acting, song writing, guitar playing, or singing, I'm sure Mr. Himber has an email address and would *coughcringecough* love to hear your suggestions. Otherwise, enjoy the show or hit the road.

Energetic smacking sounds could be heard coming from his office. "You never said it could be this good."

"Sure I did," said Spike incredulously, "plenty of times. You've just always convinced yourself you wouldn't like it. Besides," as Spike began to pout, "you've never wanted to try new things. Always so hung-up about givin' into your desires."

As Spike watched intently, Angel slowly withdrew his finger from between his lips, savoring the pungent flavor.

"See, I always knew you'd love it. Bloody brilliant, these bloomin' onions," declared Spike, licking his own fingers.
